What we collect

LOOK MOM, A FIN! collects only the information needed to provide surf and shark-risk alerts. This includes your email address (for authentication), your selected beaches, notification schedules, and any observations you choose to share.

Beach flag entries

Authorised flag officers can record the current shark flag status for a beach. Each flag entry stores the beach name, flag colour, the date and time it was recorded, an optional note or reason, and the officer's account identifier. The entries create a flag history timeline that other visitors can view.

Flag entries are not anonymous to us: we keep a record of who submitted them so we can verify the source and maintain an accurate history. However, the public flag history display does not show the officer's name or personal details.

If we later connect an official lifeguard, NSRI, or Shark Spotters feed, that data will be processed and displayed under the same public-history rules, with its source clearly labelled.

Flag history is kept for as long as it is useful for public safety and historical trend reporting. Officers can update or replace an entry if conditions change, and old values remain visible in the history trail.

Cookies

We use essential cookies to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. With your consent, we also use analytics cookies through Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site.

Non-essential cookies are disabled by default. You can change your choice at any time by clearing site data or using the consent banner when it appears.

Third parties

Google Analytics may receive anonymised usage data when you accept non-essential cookies. We do not sell your personal information.

Your choices

You can update or delete your notification preferences and observation posts from your account. To remove your account entirely, contact us at hello@dontfeedthesharks.co.za.

Changes

We may update this policy as the site evolves. Continued use after changes means you accept the revised policy.
